SUBJECT: Proposal for report on partnership between Google and Sony

Google and Intel have now teamed up with Sony to bring Google TV to the web. There has been many rumors going around of when Google was going to try and enter this market and now its becoming real. According to the New York Times, Google is lining up partners and trying to construct a technology that can make your TV more accessible to the Web. "Google has built a prototype set-top box but the technology may be incorporated directly into TV's or other devices".

Need
Today the technology that is provided to people is ever changing and people are trying to find the cheapest and best services that a company can offer. Almost everything is being worked on to become compatible with online services. Gaining access to the Web is the new trend in today's society because of the marketplace that it offers.

  • Online streaming sites are becoming very popular to Gen-Y
  • There has already been a movement to provide instant streaming videos from the Web straight through a platform( Wii, PlayStation 3, XBOX360) onto a persons TV
  • There has been numerous other companies that are attracted to the thought of online television already ( Yahoo, Microsoft, and Roku)

There has been mediocre breakthroughs with this technology suggesting that there is a big space for improvement on the current streaming of online material straight to a persons TV. Because Google owns Youtube it can position itself differently than other companies by allowing the superior access to Youtube. Google could easily put existing competitors out of business if they can develop the best technology.

Clients of Proximity need this report to understand how Google could potentially change the entire cable and TV market. If Google can develop the appropriate technology that can offer TV and the option of surfing the Web straight through their TV, they could see potential large rewards. This would allow Google to place Ads on the system and put it at the leading edge of the move to connected TV platforms.

Topics
The proposed report, " Google TV's initiation into Home Entertainment" will include the following topics:

  • What can Google TV offer to Gen-Y - advantages/disadvantages
  • How can Google TV beat the existing market and become dominant in the TV sector
  • Can Google TV sustain Gen-Y and acquire cable network viewers
  • Will Google TV be able to effectively advertise to Gen-Y

The report will also include other analysts evaluation of Google TV and their expectations on the future of the video market
